Hello from far off Australia! Empty
BeitragThema: Hello from far off Australia!   Hello from far off Australia! EmptySo 06 Mai 2012, 05:28

Hello all. I apologise but I do not speak German (I have used google translate below)
I have come across what is believed to be the only Tempo Speed in Australia. Sadly it has been dismembered and is in poor condition. This is what I know -

The Tempo was imported to Australia in the 1950s by a French man in country NSW (about 100 kilometres west from Sydney). He used it as a farm vehicle for many years during which it suffered several accidents and became quite damaged. In the 1960s he sold the vehicle to a wrecking yard for scrap. The yard owner stripped all the mechanical parts. The chassis was cut in half and converted into a trailer. Its whereabouts is now unknown. Sadly, the cab was scrapped.

However, all the mechanical parts were not scrapped but carefully stored. The owner put them up for sale last year and I have agreed to buy them (very cheap!). These include - the Jlo engine (still turning), gearbox. clutch, chain and drive sprocket, dynastart, steering wheel, steering box, exhaust, petrol tank and assorted other engine parts. It is not much to work with I know and not a good basis for a restoration, but I am still inclined to attempt a reconstruction.

I would expect I will need to fabricate most of the parts. Is anyone able to provide detailed specifications for items such as the chassis? Can items such as wheels and axles be found or substituted?? What about sourcing parts from India? Such as a cab??

I will post up a couple of photos soon. I don't have the parts yet but will give more details, such as engine number when I get them. I don't know whether it is a A200 or A400 yet.

Cheers
Paul
______________

Beifall Paul

Unfortunately I cannot quite make out the engine number on the picture. I see there is an engine plate which might give me more information.

Thank you for the identification Rolf. The wrecker's son though it was from the late 1940s, so 52-54 is close enough. The original owners are all deceased now so information about the Tempo is from hearsay. He has messaged me again today to advise more parts have been found.

The seller is packing up the parts for me this week and when I get them I will take some more photos. Basically all I will have is the engine and drive train, but it is I believe complete except for the carburetter. So I have:
Engine
Gearbox & clutch
Dynastart starter motor
Radiator
Steering wheel
Steering box
Primary drive sprocket
Exhaust/Auspuff
There are some other parts as well, but I don't have details

It is not much really. I am going to advertise in the original area to see if the chassis and rear wheels can be found, but I don't expect to find it. I will need a donor chassis, wheels and cab. It is a crazy idea I know!

Hi Henk and group
I have contacted the seller and they have the cab, bonnet and doors. They look in okay condition so I am in discussion with them.
Hello from far off Australia! Tempo_10
Hello from far off Australia! Tempo_11

Does anyone have a schematic and specification for the construction of the chassis?
Maybe photos showing how the cab attaches to the chassis?
How the engine is mounted?
How the steering and front wheel are mounted?
Thanks!!
Paul

Hello Henk. Thanks for the tip. If the seller has a contact for the original owner. Any parts are welcome.
The Tempo that I am picking up came to the same fate as the one mentioned. The cab was sawn off and scrapped and the back was converted to a trailer.
Thanks for the offer of photos/advice too.

I have confirmed with the seller of the engine parts that he does not have the suspension or engine and wheel mounting so I will need to track one down in Europe somewhere. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is one of my most urgent priorities.
I am trying to track down the chassis/trailer here in Australia. I'm not sure I'll be able to find it, but if not I'm prepared to build my own. It will probably be easier and cheaper to build a reproduction here than ship one out. I do however need to get an original cab so I am negotiating that with the cab seller in Holland. The price for shipping to Australia is surprisingly cheap - equal to the cost of the cab. So if I can find more parts now and ship once that will be better for me.
I've also ordered parts books and user guides to help me. I expect this will be a very long restoration but that's alright as I have other projects to work on. I still have an unfinished Heinkel Tourist to restore. But I'll do all I can now to gather the parts.

After a very very long time the engines and parts have arrived and I have had a chance to look over them. They are in reasonably good condition. The engine still turns freely. The radiator has no leaks. The petrol tank appears to have no leaks. The whole steering mechanism appears to be intact. The exhaust is in poor condition and badly corroded.
Hello from far off Australia! Tempo_13
Hello from far off Australia! Tempo_14
The engine is a Heinkel 400 cc two stroke. Built in 1951.
Hello from far off Australia! Tempo_12

Does anyone have any information about Heinkel two stroke engines? I am already a member of the Heinkel Deutschland Club (I have a 54 Heinkel Tourist scooter) and I know they have no information about Heinkel two strokes. Any advice welcome!

I remain in need of the front wheel, chain case and mounting for the engine/axle.
Additionally, I need some recommendations for the basic fittings - radiator hose, electric cables, spark plug spec, bolts/sizes for the engine, clutch springs, etc. Is the petrol tank cap and radiator standard sizes?
What about cables? - accelerator, choke,
What substitutes are suitable or available?

Does anyone have any detailed drawings / plans of the engine and suspension set up?
Kind regards
Paul
